Amrum plot

In the spring of 1945, during World War II, twelve-year-old Nanning helps his mother put bread on the table for their family living on an island. He goes out to sea to hunt seals, goes fishing at night and works in the fields. Despite the circumstances, life on Amrum seems almost heavenly. When the war comes to an end, however, conflicts break out.

The death of Adolf Hitler marks a definitive turning point for 12-year-old Nanning [Jasper Billerbeck] on the island of Amrum. His parents supported the Nazis, and Nanning was a member of the youth movement. Residents turn against them, and strangers end up on the island. A portrait of a child raised in a fascist state who is confronted with a suddenly uncertain future. Based on the life story of Hark Bohm, who appears at the end. Akin captures the atmosphere of island life well, but Billerbeck's mannered acting detracts from the credibility of his character. Diane Kruger has an important supporting role as a farmer who is a thorn in the side of the Nazis.

Nanning (Jasper Billerbeck) is the son of fanatical Nazis. The Second World War is drawing to a close, and for that reason, he has fled with his mother Hille (Laura Tonke) and the other children from unsafe Hamburg to the Wadden Island of Amrum, where Hille's family comes from. His father, the author of several books on racial theory, is somewhere at the front.

Due to its remote location, the actual war passes the island by almost entirely, but Nanning does see his worldview crumbling. Amrum is not exactly a Nazi stronghold. Many of the poor island's inhabitants have emigrated to the US. Some returned when the Crisis broke out, but still have family on the other side of the conflict. The island also has its own language. Now that there is more freedom to speak, Nanning suddenly hears all sorts of things that his parents kept from him.

In my opinion, a fine film could be made with the premise of Amrum. However, director Fatih Akin chose to turn it into a very old-fashioned rural drama that almost always follows the well-trodden path. Everything is just a little too heavily emphasized and over-explained. Jasper Billerbeck is also simply too weak an actor to carry the film. He really has that old-fashioned childish acting style, especially when he has to speak his lines. The same goes for the boy who plays his best friend Hermann.

It all looks very beautiful. Especially the skies. Pure Wadden porn.
