In the 1970s, Brazil suffers under a military dictatorship. In the hope of reuniting with his son and escaping his violent past, university lecturer Marcelo moves to Recife. The film is yet to be released in the Netherlands, but it has already been shown on the big screen in Flanders. And you should definitely see it there too, because it's a visual gem. The film runs over two and a half hours, which is sometimes a bit too long. But many scenes are still compelling, and it looks absolutely stunning. The Brazilian 1970s vibe is beautifully captured. Incidentally, it was the last film starring Udo Kier, who died in November 2025.

Still, a very good film. I also recently mentioned the thematically related I'm Still Here, also a strong film, but I found The Secret Agent to be somewhat more unique cinema.
Just like in "I'm Still Here," the Brazilian atmosphere of the 1970s is impressively captured. The cool vibe and colorful visuals are delightful, the joie de vivre radiating from them. But at the same time, you feel the weight of the dictatorship weighing on the people.
Where I'm Still Here follows a fairly linear course and becomes very melancholic, Filho opts for a more idiosyncratic approach.
Here too, different time periods are explored and memories are played with. But The Secret Agent is more frivolous, blending different genres, and the result feels fresher to me. The film breathes more, there's more room for humor, and at times, the whole thing even reminded me of a Tarantino crime film. The fantastic soundtrack and stunning cinematography also score points.
Both strong films, but I think this one, The Station Agent, is the better one. Moura's performance is also superb.

It's 1977 in Brazil, and times are turbulent. António [Licínio Januário] is on his way to Recife, where he must hide under a pseudonym until he finds an opportunity to flee abroad. The reasons for his planned escape gradually become clear in this impressive reconstruction of the 1970s in a corrupt country. The darkly comic first chapter sketches the culture in a way that is as shocking as it is hilarious, and the denouement in the third chapter is exceptionally suspenseful. What happens in between is not always easy to follow due to the large number of characters and their complex relationships. Those who can still concentrate, however, will be in for a truly impressive cinematic experience.
