Alpha plot

In the 1980s, eleven-year-old Alpha becomes the target of bullying and rejection at school. This is due to a rumor that spreads that she has been infected with an as-yet unknown disease. Meanwhile, one of Alpha's parents actually falls ill, which forces the teenager to confront her own mortality.

Very cool.

It's also very ambitious, and therefore certainly not the easiest film. Ducournau mixes up quite a bit of genre, style, and storylines, making it a bit of an immersive experience for the audience. A second viewing will probably make things a bit clearer, but ultimately, that doesn't seem to be the film's goal.

Visually very pleasing, the soundtrack is used extremely well, and the acting is also excellent. In my opinion, Ducournau is one of France's most interesting directors, and he's joined by several other women. A very captivating film!

4.0* and an extensive review

A Soul Crushing Drama

This opening scene looks so innocent, and then it becomes completely heartbreaking when you realize exactly what is going on. Be prepared for a shock, as this is unlike anything I've ever seen on film and truly beyond words to describe.

We've now got a refreshing look at family life amongst the trauma these people are facing, and it's wonderfully comforting. I've not seen the underlying epidemic that this family is dealing with from this side, and it's being portrayed in the loudest way I've even witnessed.

The film is visually demanding on the senses, and you can't be sure how to feel or if there is any sense to the madness. In the midst of the tragedy that is the plight of the film, there is a rebellious outpouring showing the will to live.

Ducournau (Grave, Titane) picks up where she left off with another film about teenager Alpha [Mélissa Boros], who is confronted with a strange physical change (a tattoo that regularly starts bleeding spontaneously) and a bizarre infectious disease that causes panic. That tattoo is connected to Alpha's heroin-addicted uncle [Tahar Rahim], who has been off the grid for years and is now receiving help from Alpha's mother [an excellent Golshifteth Farahani], a nurse who discovers that her brother appears to have the dreaded disease. Lots of strange goings-on filmed with a nervous (and often annoying) camera. Emma Mackey plays one of Mom's colleagues, and Finnegan Oldfield has a key supporting role as Alpha's English teacher. Very pretentious, and one can only hope that Ducournau uses her unconventional style to explore more original themes.
