Tussen Broers plot

Shortly after director Tom Fassaert's grandmother dies, his father Rob - a retired psychologist - decides to intervene in the untenable living situation of his autistic 75-year-old brother René. What starts as a concrete clean-up plan and yet another attempt to 'normalize' René, eventually develops into a profound search for their own roots. It leads them back to their abrupt abandonment in an orphanage and the last meeting with their father. This crucial event traps them in a tense bond.

Tom Fassaert portrays father Rob, also a filmmaker, and his older uncle René, who spent seven years in an institution. René leads a reclusive existence in a house so cluttered with belongings that it is almost impossible to get through. Rob has always maintained that René's problems are the result of an unfortunate childhood. After the death of his grandmother, Tom delves into the family history with Rob and René, particularly that of his grandfather, who abandoned his family when Rob (3 years old) and René (6 years old) were still children. The bickering between the lecturing Rob and the (rightfully) critical René yields remarkable moments in a family portrait that, due to the lack of universal themes, smacks of navel-gazing.
