The Promise plot

A forgotten battle, a lost future. In the 1960s, it seemed that West Papua would become independent. But international interests, geopolitical power relations and economic profit considerations decided otherwise. With unique 35mm archive material, “The Promise” brings this history back to life and reveals how a people is systematically betrayed and oppressed. When the Netherlands prepares for the independence of Dutch New Guinea, Indonesia resists. Under pressure from the United States and the United Nations, the area is transferred to Indonesia in 1962, with the promise of a referendum. But this so-called 'Act of Free Choice' turns out to be a sham. Since then, Papuans in Indonesia have been persecuted, expelled and murdered on a large scale - one of the most ignored genocides in the world.

When Sukarno declared at the end of World War II that the former East Indies would henceforth continue as the independent Indonesia, the Netherlands promised the 800,000 inhabitants of Papua a referendum to decide whether they wanted to join Indonesia or continue as an independent country. That promise was ultimately not kept and one of the consequences is that Indonesia seized power and is reportedly guilty of genocide (Indonesia does not allow an independent press). Why did the Netherlands not keep its promise? And why does it not speak out about what is happening there? Julia Jouwe is a journalist who delves into the archives to find answers to these questions and Oridek Ap is an activist who sometimes playfully, sometimes confrontationally draws attention to the situation in Papua. A fascinating and relevant lesson in (swept under the carpet) Dutch history with beautifully restored archive material. Unfortunately, Veldhuizen omits a timeline, locations and names and functions of those involved, which means that the archive images regularly cause more confusion than clarification.
