Blauwe Ballen en Andere Verkrachtingsmythes plot

Research shows that almost a quarter of women experience sexual violence in their lifetime. But we know that this is just the tip of the iceberg. If so many women experience sexual violence, who are the ones who do it to them? Rape then almost always goes unpunished. What makes the system fail time and time again in tackling sexual violence? In this documentary, Sunny Bergman investigates why sexual violence is a problem of epidemic proportions and how we can break through it.

Hats off to Sunny Bergman for continuing to draw attention to social issues whose consequences for victims are underestimated by many people. My jaw dropped when Sunny Bergman told a group of police officers how a man had abused her when she was 17 and drunk on holiday in Greece and that the morals detective said: "The first question that comes to mind is: How drunk were you?" After she told how the perpetrator pulled out her tampon, these officers responded with: "I can't imagine anyone doing that, I would never do that, I think it's absolutely disgusting." Goddammit, and that's a morals detective. He should have been a baker or a bicycle repairman. The victims' testimonies are harrowing and the pain and trauma they have to live with is evident on their faces. And we now also know that victims of sexual violence should not hire Gerard Spong ("I have the idea that women are quick to let themselves be raped. I am in favour of a resilient woman") as a lawyer. What a jerk he is.

It no longer fitted in my actual review, but I think Gerard Spong comes off a bit short. In a legal sense, he is right that in our constitutional state someone is innocent until proven guilty. The presumption of innocence has always been one of the core principles of a constitutional state. You also have to be careful that the rights of suspects are not violated if disproportionate value is attached to subjective confessions. People have their own interests and their own view of reality. In a constitutional state, it is ultimately also about there having to be compelling legal arguments to impose punishment on someone.
