Palestine 36 plot

In the year 1936, Palestine is a mandate territory under British rule. At the same time, the state has a growing number of Jewish immigrants who flee the rising fascist regimes in Europe. Some villages resist this current situation, which marks the beginning of the Arab-Palestinian uprising. In the midst of the struggle for independence, Yusuf wanders around, dreaming of a better future.

This intriguing yet one-sided historical narrative focuses on a previously underexposed key moment in Middle Eastern history: the Arab Revolt, which lasted from 1936 to 1939. It centers on Yusuf [Karim Daoud Anaya], a country boy drawn to Jerusalem's vibrant city life, and journalist Hanan [Hiam Abbass], who covers diplomatic developments and thus witnesses firsthand the growing resistance to the British (and High Commissioner Wauchope [Jeremy Irons]). The revolt led to a unification of Arab tribes and the emergence of a shared (Palestinian) identity. The British, of course, are marginalized, and Jacir omits the Jewish perspective, making this historically valuable primarily as an introduction to a significant chapter in Middle Eastern history.
