Agarrame Fuerte plot

39-year-old Adela struggles with the sudden loss of her best friend, Elena. Surrounded by people at Elena's funeral, Adela feels disconnected from the rituals and is struck by the absurdity of saying goodbye to someone so dear. After the death of her best friend, Adela travels through time, where Elena awaits her with great anticipation, with detective novels and the warmth of a crackling evening fire.

This idiosyncratic, lighthearted Uruguayan drama in three episodes begins with Elena [Victoria Jorge]'s wake, where Adela [Chiara Houracde] remains silent despite her visible, deep-seated grief. In the episodes that follow, we discover the backstory of these two best friends from Adela's perspective, with a key role reserved for Luci [Eva Dans], a mutual friend who visits them with her young son. The story is somewhat rudderless and lacks depth, but the charismatic cast and visual gags (including an amusing reference to Babe and the denouement) keep you engaged.

This film is a truly dull affair. Nothing interesting happens; even the added magical realism is dull and failed to rouse me from my boredom. The film is about friendship, where the friends could very well be lesbians, and in that case, it only reinforces the prejudice that lesbians are the least attractive, least sexy, and least interesting beings in the world. Only the few catchy pop songs—David Bowie's "Lady Stardust" and Chris Montez's "Let's Dance"—quickly awaken you, but of course, that's not the film's merit.

A film that should be my cup of tea, but this was indeed a rather dull affair. Most of the suspense comes from a moment when a child is missing,, but that only lasts a moment and doesn't fit the film's overall tone at all; it's a contrived plot element. There are some nice atmospheric shots here and there (those dancing women at a small party), and thankfully it wasn't too long, so the film didn't become too boring, but it shouldn't have been much longer either. 2.5 stars.
