Drama is the right label for this crappy film. A real drama to watch. And what does Western have to do with it? It's more about the pandemic and a sheriff who ignores all the pandemic regulations. All talk and shouting. The poster is perhaps the most fun to look at.

Mediocre drama. The story is steeped in current events and recent years, from the coronavirus pandemic to woke to Black Lives Matter. Aster tries to blend all of these in this film and doesn't really succeed. The film is very slow, and scenes are drawn out, which doesn't help the buildup of tension leading up to the violent climax. Visually, the film is strong, and there are certainly Aster's trademarks, but it's far from the level of, say, Midsommar. Not that these films are truly comparable, but it gives you an idea. The acting is excellent, and Phoenix, in particular, once again portrays a compelling character. 2.5

A wacky modern Western set in 2020, during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Joaquin Phoenix is once again superb as the somewhat dimwitted sheriff of the small town of Eddington, who takes on the smooth-talking mayor Pedro Pascal. The film's length initially seems like an insurmountable hurdle, given the slow pace and limited plot, but gradually the characters become more compelling and the events more intense, culminating in a delightful, utterly bonkers finale.
