The Bayou plot

"Fear has found a new home."

A fun vacation turns into a nightmare when Kyle and her friends crash their plane in the Everglades. It soon becomes apparent that the dangerous wilderness is not the friends' biggest problem. The swamps turn out to be the territory of hungry alligators, who are larger and more dangerous than usual due to illegally dumped chemicals.

The Bayou

After a plane crash in the swamps of Louisiana, a few survivors fought for their lives against mutated alligators created by chemical waste.

I can really appreciate crocodile and alligator movies like Crawl (2019), Rogue (2007) or even the older Alligator (1980). Unfortunately, The Bayou was not one of them for me.

The film never really managed to captivate me. Although the atmosphere was well-established at times and there was some tension here and there, this was always undone by stupid choices made by the characters. The story felt incoherent, which made the involvement lacking. Visually it also left much to be desired: the mutated alligators looked inconsistent and the acting performances were substandard.

All in all, The Bayou was a disappointing addition to the swamp monster subgenre, relying on atmosphere but falling short on almost every other front.

2 stars.

The story gets off to a somewhat chaotic start, due to the combination of a traumatic event for the protagonist, Kyle (Athena Strates), and her friends who have a nice vacation in mind for Kyle. The atmosphere and location are good, even the alligators look decent for a low-budget film. But the suspense is much weaker. The biggest drawback is the performances of almost the entire cast, with Strates and Applebaum in particular undermining the film. Admittedly, their characters are not perfect; how annoying can you be? 4/10

A decent genre piece in which directors Taneli Mustonen and Brad Watson joined forces to bring The Bayou to the big screen. Mustonen, in particular, should have known better, as the number of successful crocodile films within this genre can be counted on one hand. Fortunately, the final result scores points for credible acting, some decent effects, and a sparing amount of brutal attacks. Unfortunately, the filmmakers extract little atmosphere from the setting, and any sense of tension is certainly not built up. Towards the finale, The Bayou struggles increasingly hard to generate sensation and ultimately succumbs to it. Ultimately, it's not the worst work in this genre, but it's by no means truly memorable.
