After twenty years of disappearance, João Grilo returns to the town of Taperoá and is reunited with his faithful squire Chicó, who continues the story that Our Lady performed a miracle and brought his friend back to life. João Grilo is now considered a kind of saint and his celebrity status attracts the special attention of the two most powerful politicians in the region, who want to use him as an election campaigner. João Grilo sees all this commotion as an opportunity to finally get rich and organizes one of his famous scams.
