Teenager Rich Jenkins (Harry Lawley) is the son of an alcoholic miner (Steffan Rhodri) from Port Talbot, Wales, and despite the support of his older sister (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) and brother-in-law (Aneurin Barnard) who take him in, Rich seems a lost cause. Until literature teacher Mr. Burton (Toby Jones) accidentally discovers Richard has a talent for reciting monologues. Rich embraces his talent and aspires to be an actor, and Mr. Burton volunteers to mentor him. A conventional biography of the early years of the legendary actor we know as Richard Burton paints a good picture of a time when it was very difficult to escape the shackles of the social class into which one was born. Lawley makes a great impression with his spot-on impression of Burton.
