Yesterday in Close-Up. This documentary gives a great look at Lynch's work. An artist who turned the television and film world upside down; groundbreaking, courageous, unique, uncompromising and fascinating!

The documentary tries to solve the mystery of the filmmaker we know from mysterious films. To do this, his career is briefly described: Lynch was a visual artist who, under the influence of Francis Bacon, discovered the dark side of art, came up with the idea of making moving paintings and then decided to become a filmmaker. His first feature film, Eraserhead, was a success among filmmakers, which gave him the opportunity to make The Elephant Man and Dune, but Dune was a failure, which caused Lynch to return to the smaller film (and the TV series Twin Peaks) where he has everything in his own hands and can let the viewer get lost in another world. A constant theme of his films is to bring to the fore the dark side that is hidden behind the beautiful exterior of, for example, innocent-looking small towns in the '50s and of Hollywood, but also of the viewer: his films are about secrets and voyeurism. The documentary concludes that his films are not about the mystery of Lynch or the film characters, but about the mystery of life itself.

Surrealism – which follows the illogical logic of dreams – is considered to be the last modernist movement (modernist in the sense that it regards the unconscious as the truth behind phenomena): I think Lynch gives it a postmodern twist by putting the viewer in the role of detective who will involuntarily try to solve the puzzle by coming up with an interpretation while at the same time no interpretation is the only or correct one, so that the viewer ultimately gets lost in a bizarre world, which may also explain the success of Twin Peaks because the series depicts this endlessness par excellence (instead of the film as a closed whole).
