In “Tears in Kuala Lumpur,” the city is a labyrinth of memory and loss. Tze, a woman struggling with the mysterious disappearance of her sleepwalking husband, wanders the streets, and Jay, a photographer and modern-day flaneur, crisscrosses the cityscape with her camera to capture fleeting beauty and hidden stories. For Tze, the city is a repository of ghostly echoes where the past is omnipresent. For Jay, it is an opportunity for existential exploration where “photography takes you to places where you can escape your own reality.” As their paths cross, fragmented memories of love and longing emerge in stark, monochrome images set against the backdrop of Kuala Lumpur’s daily rhythms.
