Een Oekraïens Dorp in Vlaardingen plot

Vlaardingen has had a true Ukrainian enclave since the summer of 2023. A new district has been built on the edge of the city, especially for a thousand Ukrainian refugees. With beautiful flex homes, a small school and a sports hall. The district has been given the name Mrija, which is Ukrainian for dream.

In 2023, the municipality of Vlaardingen approves the plan for a temporary residential area on a piece of vacant land in Vlaardingen. The catch: in three years, the houses will disappear because the land will then be used for another purpose. Mayor Bert Wijbenga is optimistic, alderman Ivana Somers-Gardenier works together with location manager Leonieke Schouwenburg to ensure that everything runs smoothly. The filmmakers speak to a number of refugees, to people looking for housing and to residents of the municipality. Their unsurprising comments and criticism are merely a reminder of how difficult it is to temporarily accommodate war refugees. But when the children in the primary school built especially for them have their say, you discover a facet that is often overlooked and that alderman Somers presents in her speech to the municipal council with simple but effective words.
