A newborn ghost of a young woman has 28 days to learn how to scare people or she will disappear forever. But for the shy, self-conscious rookie, it won’t be an easy task. Makoto, a former wannabe pop star turned master of scare tactics, takes her and her friend under his wing, determined to make the young ghost a star. But a terrifying diva has also set her sights on the rookie.

Interesting concept where spirits have to prove themselves through a show before they are released on humanity. The film reminded me of the animated films Coco, where spirits also live in an in-between world, and Monsters Inc.
You can also see the necessary criticism in it, where in the media landscape the entertaining talent shows, with or without celebrities, are getting out of hand.
It's fun anyway, although I didn't find everything equally successful. Sometimes a bit lame, but all in all witty enough for a fun evening.

The idea is nice but the execution less so. Despite the flashy direction and bright colors (which I am normally a fan of) there is not really anything special visually. The second hour was also too much repetition of moves which also caused boredom. Then there is still some social criticism woven in and the whole world about ghosts and talent shows is nicely conceived, but the viewing experience was simply less strong for me. 2.0*.

About ghosts who do their best to remain ghosts or simply disappear. The central character is a ghost who died young and is in danger of doing so. Her only chance to continue to exist is to scare the living. Very difficult, because it is not in her nature to stand out. Even during her life, no one noticed her. It is so bad that only her parents still mourn her death. Director and writer John Hsu does not even give her a name. That says a lot about the extent of her invisibility.
Although the nameless ghost carries a lot of psychological baggage, the film is not gloomy or melancholic. The film could even be considered a comedy. In her attempts to stand out and scare people, the nameless ghost is helped by other ghosts. These attempts produce hilarious moments. In fact, Dead Talents Society is a typical underdog story that takes place around a group of pathetic ghosts. The only difference with the classic underdog story is of course the somewhat less everyday setting.
Dead Talents Society is a sympathetic film with sympathetic characters. The story is not complicated and the characters are easy to read. Despite the somewhat morbid subject, there is room for humor and of course for feelgood. Dead Talents Society is just a nice snapshot that does not ask much of the viewer. I will probably forget the film in a while, but I enjoyed myself while watching it. Nice this.
