In 1974, writer Linda Rosenkrantz receives her good friend and photographer Peter Hujar in her New York apartment. During this day, they talk about the art world and the personal difficulties that come with the life of an artist. Hujar also mentions his desire to be truly seen and the fear that this will never come true.

For a book, Linda Rosenkrantz (Rebecca Hall) is interviewing people from her circle of New York artists and intellectuals. The topic of conversation: the events of the past day. On December 19th, it's the turn of 40-year-old photographer Peter Hujar (Ben Whishaw). The audio recordings were lost, so Sachs used Rosenkrantz's transcription for this statically filmed, textbook example of images of talking heads. As a play, it's at best enjoyable for older New Yorkers and/or those familiar with the New York art world of the time. As a film, despite the talents of Whishaw and Hall, it's a hopeless endeavor.
