Stiller plot
American James White finds himself in an unexpected situation in Switzerland when he is mistaken for missing sculptor Anatol Stiller and is arrested. Stiller is wanted for his part in a political scandal. Contrary to what the authorities claim, James insists that he is actually James White. During the investigation, a close bond develops between James and Julika, Anatol Stiller's wife. As the two grow closer, more and more questions arise about the true identity of the mysterious American.

During a visit to Switzerland, James White [Albrecht Schuch] is arrested because he is mistaken for Anatol Stiller, a visual artist with communist sympathies who disappeared years ago and was presumed dead. Anatol's wife [Paula Beer] and son [Sven Schelker] confirm that James and Anatol are the same person, but James vehemently denies it. In flashbacks, we discover Anatol's background. It's a story that doesn't lend itself well to film adaptation, because the dual role of Schuch (who also plays Anatol) immediately gives away the answer to the central question.
