Kiss of the Spider Woman plot

In 1981, during the Dirty War in Argentina, political prisoner Valentín shares a cell with window dresser Molina, who has been convicted of public indecency. A close bond develops between the two. To escape the horrors of his reality, Molina tells him about a Hollywood musical starring his favorite actress and diva Ingrid Luna. She plays both the role of fashion editor Aurora and that of the Spider Woman who knows how to kill her victims with a kiss.

A film adaptation of the musical version of Manuel Puig's novel, which had already been adapted into a film in 1985, starring Raul Julia and William Hurt (who won an Oscar for his flamboyant performance). In an Argentine prison, the homosexual Luis [Tonatiuh] shares a cell with political activist Valentin [Diego Luna], who, despite intense interrogation, still refuses to betray his accomplices. Luis helps Valentin escape from everyday reality by retelling the imaginative pulp films of Ingrid Luna [Jennifer Lopez]. This creates a bond between two very different men. It's hard to believe that David Byrne was partly responsible for the negligible songs that nearly destroyed the original story's grim atmosphere. Condon reveals a crucial plot twist far too early, resulting in insufficient development between the main characters. Luna and Tonatiuh deliver fine work, Lopez disappoints, and Condon proves once again that the magic of the MGM musicals has been definitively lost with the statically filmed, undynamic musical intermezzos.
