Nice movie in which a number of teenage girls compete for the title of prom queen. This part after the trilogy takes place in 1988. Fairly standard characters, but that is undoubtedly the intention. Nicely bloody here and there. A bit monotonous, but the 80s setting is nice (there are also quite a few musical hits). A small 3 stars.

It's all very easy-going. The nostalgic 80s vibes. The slasher villain with his predictable murders. The many references to other horror classics. Maybe the only really fun thing is that those 'beauty queens' are after each other's lives, but even that aspect doesn't quite come across. The acting is too bad and you can hardly build a bond with the characters.

Fear Street: Prom Queen

In Fear Street: Prom Queen, newcomer Lori Granger tries to find her place at Shadyside High, where a series of horrific events shake the school during the battle for the title of prom queen.

Nothing new under the sun. To be honest, I can hardly remember the previous parts of the series and I'm afraid that will happen with this film. It's just a pretty standard slasher film that doesn't really excel in anything.

The story is simple and completely cast in an 80s atmosphere, which is clearly reflected in the decoration, music and clichés. That nostalgic atmosphere works well and provides a pleasant energy in the film. That energy and the lively pace ensure that the whole thing remains just worth it.

The acting is okay, although no one really manages to make a lasting impression. The characters remain rather flat and feel like a standard slasher recipe. The kills could have made the difference, but they disappoint – they were not very original and the execution left much to be desired. A shame, because that is exactly where the film could have distinguished itself, since it is a real slasher.

In terms of tension, the film offers little, which means the story remains predictable and feels like a repetition of moves we have seen too often – and often more convincingly.

Fear Street: Prom Queen is mainly a repetition of familiar slasher formulas without any significant innovation. Anyone looking for excitement or originality will be disappointed.

2.5 stars.
