Newspaper columnist Tad McGeehan looks back on the life and career of the famous heavyweight boxing champion, who, to the chagrin of his mother, traded his violin lessons for boxing lessons and became a professional boxer, on the night that boxer Joe Louis makes his comeback and loses to a certain Rocky Marciano. Together with his loyal coaches Jackie "Chappie" Blackburn and Mannie Selamon, he takes on formidable opponents such as Primo Carnera, Max Bear, James J. Braddock and his eternal German rival Max Schmeling.
