Life and Other Problems plot

Ten years ago, the young giraffe Marius made headlines because the Danish zoo where he was kept wanted to euthanize him; he had become redundant for the breeding program. Marius' fate caused outrage worldwide, not least among conservative Americans. At the zoo, staff prepare to euthanize Marius. While the commotion continues and images of foaming FOX presenters are broadcast around the world, the zoo director refuses to be blackmailed.

On February 9, 2014, Mads Frost Bertelsen, the veterinarian at Zoologisk Have København, shot dead the two-year-old giraffe Marius. The decision to kill Marius was leaked prematurely and resulted in a media frenzy and protests at the entrance to the zoo. Kestner reconstructs the events of that time in broad outline, but is especially interested in a complex issue that is connected to it: to what extent do animals have a consciousness and are humans even capable of giving an opinion about it? What did the death of Marius mean for the other giraffes? Is it different for them than for Kestner, who has to let go of his adult daughters? He bombards scientists from various sub-fields with interesting questions and meets Charles Foster, an idiosyncratic scientist who studies the consciousness of animals by imitating their behavior exactly. A bit messy, but entertaining and it certainly makes you think about life and other problems.
