Eden plot

"In paradise, survival is the real challenge."

In 1929, physician Friedrich Ritter and his lover Dora Strauch flee their native Germany. Their conviction that bourgeois thinking undermines the true nature of humanity makes them turn their backs on society. Amidst the rugged landscape of the Galapagos Islands, they find a new home where Friedrich can focus on writing his manifesto and where Dora tries to cure her MS through meditation. A while later, their lonely existence is disrupted by Margaret and Heinz Wittmer and by the self-proclaimed Baroness Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn, who wants to build a luxurious hotel on the site with her two lovers. The harsh weather, the wild animals and the lack of comfort prove to be a tough situation for everyone present, but it is especially living together that puts everyone to the test.

Our animal instincts are our inner truth...

Paradise is a place without people. As soon as people appear, they pollute the open space with their presence. This philosophical and not particularly humanitarian film offers a glimpse into a microcosm of total freedom, where a dozen people share an island. True human nature emerges when it is no longer restrained by social organization. Selfishness, lust for power, betrayal, and manipulation. The mystery of Floreana might well have been the outcome of a failed social experiment. Who knows?
The film's main savior is Ana de Armas as a baroness who wreaks havoc on the island with her manipulations. Her performance is exceptional. The same can't be said of all the other actors. Brühl = , and I've also seen Law perform better than he did as a toothless hermit. The other actors fall somewhere in between.
A solid film from Ron Howard, not family-friendly as we're used to from him, but relentlessly melancholic, with beautiful cinematography of natural beauty that almost seems to grin with the dark human soul.

A huge star cast and a big budget, but also a terribly weak film. Howard has made some very good things, but this is a blunder.

And then that silly accent, truly ridiculous. And honestly, I don't think most of them are particularly strong in their roles. Jude Law, Kirby, and De Armas are so bad that it quickly started to get on my nerves.

It could have been a captivating film, as the story had everything going for it, but it turned out to be a weak concoction....

A typical project for Ron Howard, and let's not forget Hans Zimmer: Expedition Robinson. However, they've both made better things than this film. The true-life aspect boosts my score slightly, because the story itself, which set a clear direction from the start, wasn't the best part of the film. There are some nice shots here and there, but the most interesting part was the end credits sequence.

Unfortunately, as a whole, it's been blown out of proportion in the media.
