Broken Rage plot

“Broken Rage” is a two-part film. The first half is a gritty action film set in a dark criminal underworld, centered around a hitman and his struggle to survive when he finds himself caught between the police and the yakuza. The second half follows the same story, but transformed into a comedy, a parody of the first half as a whole, scene by scene.

Takeshi Kitano has not been getting any light in the Netherlands for the past twenty years, it seems. But his latest is still available to stream on Amazon Prime. Just not with Dutch subtitles.

Yes, the film is short. As the app messages towards the end already support, but then short but powerful. Kitano is back to his old strength at his age and once again uses his absurd humor.

Broken Rage is actually a combination of his old gangster films and his concept in Takeshis'. It comprises one story, told in two ways. In the first half, Kitano is an aging gangster who proceeds through the story in the standard way. He lets his beloved Colt speak; pulls the same look as you would know from all his gangster films; then something goes wrong... etc. etc. etc. A serious composition.

In the second part the story is repeated, but then in a very banal, cartoonish and absurd way and here we are dealing with a pretty clumsy gangster and the characters we have known before are not entirely human either. A hilarious setup where you are regularly hit on your laughing muscles and that is just quite but wonderfully wrong. Then those necessary toet toet boing boing sounds that have been added. Phenomenal scenes too: That interrogation. In a dancing circle. The musical chairs. The suspects who have to appear with numbers. That mentally handicapped in that suitcase. You would even think of close ties with Miike.

And yes, the ending... It can be like this too.

Yes, despite the ridiculously short running time, Kitano has delivered a small masterpiece here in which he makes fun of himself. It looks like the man is not going to retire anytime soon.

From director and writer Takeshi Kitano. About a hitman who in the first half of the film manifests himself as tough, effective and professional and in the second half experiences the same events again but then as a bungler. Broken Rage is initially a serious thriller and then does it again as an absurd comedy. Where in the first half there were punches, shots were fired and blood was shed, the viewer suddenly sees slapstick and visual humor. Original and quite fun, those two contradictions in style.

The predictable reactions of the viewers to his film, Kitano himself shows. At two moments the film is interrupted and an online chat appears in which viewers air their opinions about the film. They are obvious but Kitano probably hits the nail on the head. What is a difficult to digest experiment for one viewer, is no surprise for those who know not only Takeshi Kitano but also his comic alter ego Beat Takeshi. The director and writer does both. What is surprising is that he shows both his cinematic sides in a single film.

In Broken Rage, a fairly clichéd story about a hitman is given a satirical twist. The result is a film with bizarre humor that is sometimes very funny but perhaps more often very lame. In any case, I did not like everything. Just like I actually found the first half barely interesting. Still, it is good to note that there are still filmmakers who do not care about conventions and just do their own experimental thing.
