Cynical, disillusioned Tom Mitchell [Steve Coogan] has just been accepted by headmaster Buckle [Jonathan Pryce] to the bilingual Argentinean St. George's College when the school is forced to close due to the military coup of 1976. He decides to travel to Uruguay with the two friends he has made: his Finnish colleague [Björn Gustafsson] and a penguin he temporarily cared for to impress the woman [Julia Fossi] he hoped to seduce and who will not leave his side. Thanks to the penguin, Tom spontaneously gets chatted to by passers-by and begins to open up to the world. And to life. Coogan is a master of understatement, both as a comedian and an actor, and here he plays one of the best roles of his career. Cattaneo also resists the temptation to milk the penguin's cuteness and thus ensures that this potential sentimental dragon becomes an exceptionally moving comedy drama. Based on Tom Mitchell's memoirs, which he began when he saw his own film footage (with which the film ends) of the penguin.

It is quite a daring step, making a cheerful film with Argentina in the background during the junta period of 1976.. but it works! Bizarre to think that this story is based on true events.

So you see, even (or maybe especially?) in dark times there is a need for bright spots. Of course, the horrors have been pushed firmly into the background. This does give it a bit of an unrealistic edge. On the other hand, if you work at such a rich school where children of those in power attend, you may be less bothered by a dictatorship.

All in all a nice film that is not too predictable. Coogan is the best in such roles he knows exactly what he is doing. But also his character development is credible. And that is perhaps the biggest challenge when you make such a film.

4 stars then

A good film about an English teacher who gets a job at a boys' boarding school in Argentina. A bit of an odd film about the friendship between a man and a penguin against the backdrop of the 1976 military coup. But it ultimately works quite well. Steve Coogan is excellently cast and delivers a rather understated performance.
