The film impresses from the start because the story has a certain ambiguity throughout: the film is about secrets where you don't know exactly what the people involved know, which makes the development unpredictable and results in an exciting crime story. The 'old secret' (that Michelle and Marie-Claude were prostitutes tied to pimps) gives a new dimension to the 'new secret' (and vice versa), making it even more mysterious to what extent Michelle is the victim, the perpetrator or neither. In any case, the people involved have no interest in the truth and you get the impression that the people involved are secretly condemned to each other and therefore to silence, as is often the case with sexual abuse, and the dividing line between accident, malicious intent and good intentions with bad consequences remains unclear. Only the ending I found a bit of an anticlimax, although even that is ambiguous and therefore fitting: will Michelle take the secret to her gravewhich will solve the problem once and for all or will her death just raise extra suspicion for Vincentso that the secret will come out anyway, just like the villagers discovered Michelle's old secret?

Intriguing psychological drama about 70-something Michelle [Hélène Vincent] and her complex relationship with the most important people in her life. By not showing the most dramatic moments, Ozon raises an interesting mystery: to what extent is Michelle directly or indirectly responsible for these events? Daughter Valérie [Ludivine Sagnier] reluctantly comes to stay for a week with her son Lucas [Garlan Erlos]. She leaves again the next day because of an incident. Shortly afterwards, Vincent [Pierre Lottin], the son of Valérie's bosom friend Marie-Claude [Josiane Balasko], is released early. What exactly he did is one of the many questions that Ozon leaves open with the unsatisfactory ending. Excellent acting and direction, but Ozon should have come up with a better ending.

Great Ozon this. Good pace, excellent acting, captivating story and strong character sketches. Visually very solid and also a bit boring although this is not a film to do all kinds of spectacular things with the camera. This is real auteur cinema. There are perhaps a few too many plots and side paths in it, which means that none of them work completely top. Partly this thing is drama but the crime part eventually comes to dominate but also lingers a bit. I clearly found the drama part and the sketch of the people and the village better. 3.5*.
