Le Larbin plot

Louis, a lazy young party boy, gets into all kinds of trouble and lavishly spends the fortune of his father, the chairman of a luxury hotel group. Furious, his father decides to teach his son a lesson with a revolutionary idea: make him believe that he mysteriously landed three and a half centuries ago, during the time of Louis XIV. Caught in this carefully constructed masquerade, the young man soon discovers that life back then was not all castles. He has to say goodbye to glitter and smartphones and is forced to exchange them for ballets, buckets and rags. Abused by a tyrannical viscount, the young stooge is in for a rough ride.

Poorly and totally unbelievably worked out. It has something of The Truman Show (1998), with Cornillac taking over the director's role from Ed Harris, but little more is done with it than incorporating a silly romantic subplot. Not successful as a comedy either; I would think that the intention is to make you happy or laugh with a comedy, but if that is not the case then this is unfortunately not a good film. The jokes are so inflated and clumsy that you could have made them up yourself.

Also the way in which the young rich kid just believes everything is toe-curling. This would have all worked better with a fantasy element for example where the rich kid would really be catapulted into the past like in Coppola's Peggy Sue Got Married (1986). In terms of acting, only Cornillac is still okay as the eccentric director with his English vocabulary. Kad Merad is disappointing as often in recent years. No, not the comedy of the year.
