Jongens zonder Thuis plot

Bad friends, violent incidents or parents with problems: there are various reasons why some boys can no longer live at home. If they prove to be too difficult for regular youth institutions, they can sometimes go to Wonen Met Kansen. In these small-scale residential groups, the counselors mainly look at what the boys can and want. In this documentary, documentary makers Maria Mok and Meral Uslu follow eight boys with all kinds of problems.

Portrait of boys who have often needed youth care for years and are now participating in 'Living with Opportunities', a small-scale project that prepares them step by step for an independent life. Mok and Uslu do not opt for a fly-on-the-wall approach, so we have to rely mainly on the stories the boys tell. They often find it difficult to talk about their past, also because they do not always know how to find the right words. We also learn little about concrete assistance: we see a whiteboard to check off chores, there is a conversation about desired behavior during job applications, but other than that things seem to be quite free. A superficial documentary that hardly provides any interesting or sensational insights.
