Dìdi plot

Izaac Wang is an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy. In 2008, during the last summer month before high school starts, Izaac learns what his family cannot teach him: how to skate, how to flirt and how to love his mother. He stands at the early days of social media, where AIM emoticons and MySpace rankings carry the weight of heartbreak and friendships forged and broken.

A sympathetic, if somewhat undistinguished coming-of-age film about a 13-year-old boy (Izaac Wang) who has to survive in the early days of social media in 2008. The well-developed characters are a big plus and the awkward situations that arise are well-shot, but ultimately the film is just a bit too ordinary to really make an impression. A nice picture of the times, though.

A nice coming of age that does indeed remind me a bit of Mid90s, although I found the skating scene much less prominent here than in that other film. The plot encompasses social media even more, so you often see Wang Wang tapping on his PC and interacting with his peers. It is also the communication tool par excellence for the not very socially aware Wang Wang.

With his bizarre behavior he fails to maintain his friendships or a budding potential love affair. He always manages to shoot himself in the foot or to let himself be imposed as a fifth wheel. His relationship with his sister and mother is also not optimal, although he does realize what he has in them. A typical teenager with his issues and insecurities, looking for recognition and confirmation. In addition to his normal "being a teenager" he also struggles with his ethnic background and does not know whether he should deny it or highlight it.

Wang Wang is well portrayed and his character comes across as authentic. He still created a sense of sympathy and credibility for me as a viewer, despite some of the strange behaviors he did.
