Vrijgevochten plot

In this documentary, Isis Verbeek fights both literally and figuratively for a place at the largest combat sports organization in the world, the UFC. Her fighting talent quickly makes it clear that her ambitions are not limited to the Netherlands; she takes up the challenge to achieve success in America. The sacrifices she has to make to seize her chance for a contract are examined up close.

A documentary about martial arts.

I think it's brave to take up martial arts seriously, and the idea of pursuing a career in it is even braver - and the documentary also gives an idea of that, because it certainly doesn't go smoothly. One setback after another, but Isis is just as serious as her in-your-face tattoos suggest.

That then builds to the climax in which Isis gets stuck and gets knocked out of the critical match. Too bad - especially for Isis, of course, but also for the maker who would undoubtedly have preferred to end with a positive moment. Perhaps there will be a sequel.
