Homefront plot

A Ukrainian family with five children flees the war in the east and ends up in Mshanets, a farming village near the Polish border. Here the family starts building a new home. At the same time, two documentary makers come to the village, looking for a story. In the Lymar family they find the ideal characters for their film. But one day, when the renovation of their house is almost finished, the family disappears. The filmmakers look for them and gradually try to find an answer to the question: what does a person need to feel at home?

Zeppers Film produced this documentary for BNNVARA, in which two young Ukrainian women return to their motherland with a camera to document the life of a family in wartime. From August 2022, they will follow the Lymar family from Sumy, a city just northeast of Ukraine, who have fled to Mshanets, a village near the Polish border. With the help of some villagers, they renovate a dilapidated house so that they can live there as long as they cannot return to Sumy. We see the parents doing odd jobs, the children playing and some villagers passing by. When the directors return after a break, the family has flown. The inexperienced Anna's clumsy film style has something endearing, but the amateurism comes at the expense of depth and structure.
