Touda [Nisrin Erradi] is a Shikhat, a singer of exuberant Moroccan pop songs, who hopes to escape the transgressive behavior of men by continuing her career in Casablanca and focusing on Aïta, singing often atmospheric traditional songs that originated in the countryside. She also hopes to quickly find (and pay for) a place to live there so that she can bring her speechless son [Joud Chamihy] over and send him to a school for deaf-mute children. In Casablanca she meets an old, experienced violinist [El Moustafa Boutankite] who wants to help her realize her dream. Character study full of lively music, convincingly played and sung by Erradi, requires some knowledge of Moroccan culture and the traditional role of a Shikhat. From a Western perspective, the impression arises that a Shikhat has the status of a stripper, and that is probably not entirely coincidental. That doesn't change the fact that there is a lack of story and that Ayouch and co-writer Maryam Touzani couldn't come up with an original or satisfying ending. If you are a fan of Moroccan pop, you may enjoy this more.
