A New Kind of Wilderness plot

To make ends meet, Maria occasionally works as a photographer. She also captures the special life of her family and shares it on her blog Wildandfree. But Maria becomes ill and dies after a fairly short period. Her death means the family is faced with major changes. Nik is forced to sell the farm and reluctantly he and his children must let go of their isolated and natural lifestyle and become part of modern society. The three youngest stay with Nik, while their half-sister Ronja goes to live with her father in the city.

The documentary is about the neo-romantic project of a woman – a photographer – who chooses with her family for an independent and free, therefore non-social, life in nature that is determined by love for each other and nature instead of prosperity. The upbringing of the children is also à la Rousseau: the child learns what it needs so that it remains natural – a bit 'wild' – instead of becoming 'civilized', therefore artificial and fake. However, the woman dies soon after, but the man tries to keep his promise to continue her project. But he encounters many problems: the eldest daughter who is not his leaves after her mother's death to live with her natural father, he has to sell the farm because he cannot work and be with the children all day and when a compromise is reached whereby the children go to school three days a week, those children discover a new world – from computer games to new friends – that is much more interesting than their old life of nature and close family ties. The project disintegrates but the love for each other remains, so that the moral of the story is that of all similar stories: life outside society is not sustainable for long but its ideals still bring something good into an otherwise corrupt society.

I have very mixed feelings after seeing the film. I think the ideals of the Payne family are wonderful, but the way director Jacobsen has portrayed them is too personal for me. That is to say, she follows the family too closely and the interactions between them seem too forced because they are constantly aware of the fact that a camera is following them.

Despite this, the shots are beautiful and the story is moving and inspiring. But I would have preferred to keep some distance.

Maria and Nik decided years ago to leave the rat race and live as self-sufficiently as possible on a Norwegian farm. This documentary follows the family from Maria's death from cancer and Nik's attempt to make Maria's greatest wish - that the family continue on the same path - come true. That is not easy and if the family had spent a little more time on the practical problems of the future and if Nik had a little more backbone, he would take the children to his native England. It is a documentary, but due to the many reenacted scenes and hackneyed dialogues it never feels authentic. All sorts of things happen, but never go into depth. Yet another superficial pseudo-meditative film that relies solely on pretty pictures and a romantic worldview.
