You normally encounter serial killers in thrillers and horror films. No wonder, of course, since the regular murder of a human being is, after all, a rather dark affair. There are exceptions. Recently, I saw the fun and lighthearted How to Make a Killing (2026). A comedy in which the protagonist is an amiable serial killer. In Psycho Therapy, the main character is writer Keane, who is struggling not only with his relationship but also with a new book. He runs into admirer and former serial killer Kollmick, who wants to provide him with inspiration through his stories to free him from his writer's block.

At first, you might think that the film is likely to concern itself in some way with the life story of Kollmick, whose gruesome tales inspire writer Keane to write a book following the motto: to succeed, you must appeal to the reader's lowest instincts. The film drops this approach early on and spins a story around a misunderstanding. The serial killer is mistaken for a relationship coach by Keane's wife. The misunderstanding yields a number of incredibly funny scenes in which Kollmick employs his murderous experiences in a way that sounds like sound psychological advice.

Director and writer Tolga Karacelik delivers an enjoyable debut film with Psycho Therapy. A film with fine black humor. A film with comical events. A film with an excellent cast. Steve Buscemi plays the curious and talkative serial killer. John Magaro is the somewhat eccentric writer. And Britt Lower is the cool husband. Fun characters who interact pleasantly and thus contribute to the entertainment. As a point of criticism, one could say that the film remains on the timid side here and there, where I feel more explosive escalation would have been welcome. In any case, a fine debut. Curious to see Karacelik's next film.
