"Whatever compelling story, themes, or even character development may appear to exist in 'Bambi: The Reckoning,' it's immediately overshadowed by needlessly annoying sound design, disturbing amounts of predictable jump scares, and excessive, in-your-face gore hurled at the audience without any discipline. Like Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, this spiritual successor possesses the narrative potential and visual style of a good horror film, but falls prey to the prurient temptations of pulp films."

A more disappointing 3.5/10. You don't expect much, but it's hard not to watch critically when it's clearly trying to tell a story, with a clear and fitting theme at that. It stands more independently and is less wacky than Blood and Honey 2—which made that film enjoyable with its larger narrative—and that makes it a compelling contender for improvement, but it's a shame it's not. Maybe Pinocchio: Unstrung (2026) will be a bit better.

On their way to visit family, Xana [Roxanne McKee] and her son Benji [Tom Mulheron] survive a bizarre car accident in the woods. Before they know it, the mutated, bloodthirsty Bambi is hot on their heels. The type of horror film that relies not on story or acting, but on atmosphere, exciting action sequences and bloodshed with a wink. And on those fronts, this pseudo-sequel scores highly.
