The Waste Land plot

The documentary “The Waste Land” translates TS Eliot's poem of the same name into the present. One hundred years later, Eliot's words still resonate in our contemporary reality and appeal to the imagination of many. Perhaps precisely because they are not easy to understand. Filmmaker Chris Teerink makes no attempt to explain the poem, but looks for similarities. Instead of moving images, he opts for photos and stills, creating a slideshow, as it were, that imitates the fragmented essence of Eliot's language.

TS Eliot's famous poem 'The Waste Land' (1922) is central to this disjointed documentary. This poem is recited in fragments and someone (only visible in photos) tells what it means to him, her or them. Then the same person comes up with all kinds of philosophical reflections on modern times that have nothing to do with the poem at all. Word, image and sound often live in completely different worlds here, so it is impossible to make sense of them. Just like the poem itself, by the way, so in a sense Teerink hits the nail on the head. Too bad that's not a recommendation. Only for the biggest fans of poetry, they may be able to make more chocolate out of it.
