Basel Adra, a young Palestinian activist from Masafer Yatta in the West Bank, has been fighting the mass expulsion of his community by the Israeli occupation since childhood. He documents the slow eradication of villages in his home region, where Israeli government soldiers gradually demolish houses and drive out residents. At some point he meets Yuval, an Israeli journalist, who supports him in his efforts. An unlikely alliance is formed. But the relationship between the two comes under pressure due to the enormous inequality between them: Basel lives under military occupation while Yuval lives freely and without restrictions.

Residents of the West Bank are being ordered to leave their homes based on a legal ruling by the Israeli Supreme Court, because they were allegedly built illegally on military training grounds of the Israeli army. Israel is thus denying the existence of villages that were already marked on maps in the 19th century. This documentary follows activists Basel Adra and Yuval Abraham who have been filming the destruction of the homes for years and are a thorn in the side of the Israeli army until October 2023. A one-sided, award-winning film that confirms that most film prizes are awarded based on topicality, not quality. This is certainly relevant and there are certainly impressive and shocking images, but it is much of the same without a clear storyline and therefore could certainly have been half an hour shorter. Heartbreaking and a more than deserved nomination for the upcoming Oscars as best documentary. More than ever very topical again, with Gaza in the spotlight, but with the colonization of the West Bank continuing undisturbed. Israel permits itself a lot with the expansion of settlements, confiscation of territory (with or without specious reasons), restriction of freedom of movement, destruction of houses, permitted violence by settlers and raids and invasions by soldiers.
Beautifully portrayed through the budding friendship between Basel and Yuval. Fortunately, the focus is almost unchanged on the Jewish colonizations. A documentary that leaves an impression.
