Hako Otoko plot

A man with a cardboard box over his head wanders the streets of Tokyo. He peers at the world through a peephole and continuously writes down what he sees in a notebook. The photographer Myself sees the man and is fascinated. He decides to do the same and become a box man himself. But his path there is not easy; countless challenges and dangers lurk.

Nice new Ishii.

The marketing of the film is a bit overblown, for the enthusiast it is mainly an interesting mix of previous styles and influences. That the project has been alive for thirty years will be fine, but that is pure lead time. It is mainly a crazy premise, combined with Ishii's mix of punk and drama. A bit like Vital.

Nice that Nagase and Asano are facing each other again. Also enough to talk about. The difficult thing about this film is that it is a mix of arthouse and cult/genre, which limits the film to a smaller audience. But fans of Ishii will find what they are looking for here.

A tough affair, this wacky Japanese film about somber men living in cardboard boxes and boring the unsuspecting viewer with endless intellectual drivel. With the arrival of a beautiful woman, everything seems bearable after all, but alas, the film then drags on for another hour to its rather unremarkable ending. I must have missed the point!
