Beautiful serene film as I like to see from Japan. They make no bones about it and the film immediately indicates what it is about. After an earthquake followed by a tsunami, Minako is left blank. No one sees her, no one hears her. She soon finds out that she has died and that she is not the only one in this situation.

The film has a humanistic moral about purpose in life and recording regrets. Everyone has their own life and story, with things they would (still) have wanted to do or things they would have wished differently. A number of characters are explored further in this way. The main character who searches for her son Ryo. I wonder what you should hope for: do you want to find him dead or alive?

What I found most interesting was the filmmaker's story and the decision to further complete his film. I often have a soft spot for films within a film and that is no different here. Poeticly beautiful at times. Fine!

Fujii feels good at Netflix.

Village was also worth a visit, it is recognizable, but has a number of different touches. The more imaginative design in particular gives the film a slightly different allure, making it slightly easier and more enjoyable cinema. Sometimes on the edge of sentimental, but it never goes too far.

In terms of design, it is of course reminiscent of Koreeda's After Life, but the effect is quite different. While Koreeda mainly makes slow arthouse, this is a much more commercial work. But it is a style that Fujii has mastered and in which he himself knows how to excel.

There is plenty to enjoy visually, especially, but the acting is also good. Although it is a few oversized supporting roles that are most convincing. I thought the soundtrack was the weakest spot, although I still enjoyed this film more than enough.

4.0* and a extensive review
