The gimmick of polishing up old footage with generated images of attacking Martians is amusing and certainly delivers some unusual moments in the first fifteen minutes, but director Mike Slee fails to hold our attention. The Great Martian War drags on for far too long, presenting utter nonsense. Within the context of the source material, everything is presented seriously, of course, but this can't disguise the fact that it ultimately overflows with dullness. When Slee then shows the same archive footage over and over again, it becomes even more obvious that the filmmakers didn't quite know how to fill such a running time. My advice, therefore, is to absolutely not try that and shorten the runtime by a full hour.
