De Nachtwaker plot

Janneke has been working as a volunteer in palliative terminal care for over twenty years, both in the hospice and in people's homes. In the documentary Janneke is seen both in her daily life and while waking. Janneke experiences night waking as something very intimate. The world sleeps and she is alone with the clients. It is a remarkable experience to experience up close how the other person loses control and sometimes shares intimate stories that he still wants to share. When the night is over, Janneke returns to her own life. Can Janneke, by closely following the deaths of others, gain control over her own deathbed?

In her battle against cancer, Janneke van Rees came face to face with death. She realized that she did not want anyone to die alone and volunteered as a Night Watchman, someone who, on behalf of immediate family, watches over people who are dying, especially at night. She talks about her experiences and, remarkably, we see her working with people who were about to die. Because of the subject, this is certainly an uncomfortable and daring documentary, but it is of great value because it removes taboos about the dying process. The scenes with Janneke's family seem a bit contrived and forced.
