This is located somewhere at the bottom of the grindhouse barrel. But it's not so bad that it becomes good. No, it's amateurishly bad. Bad direction - what is it with those freeze frames - bad editing. For a film that focuses on a serial killer and his victims, there is 0 suspense. Serial killer Harvey has apparently only made 1 close-up available, which is then repeated regularly. The acting is poor, and is further emphasized by the aforementioned poor editing, and undoubtedly the lack of coaching/direction. You probably can't even blame them. It's boring except for a few unintentionally funny moments. The soundtrack is nice and cheesy but that can't save it.
The original title Hostages was changed to Another Son of Sam to capitalize on the current events of the true crime serial killer Son of Sam who slaughtered people in NYC in the late 1970s. Amateurishly bad exploitation is the result.
