A man alone stares at dark, sparsely populated mountains. He must gain clarity about a number of missing children and soon meets a woman who is investigating a number of murders in the same, extremely closed village. The two cases are connected and things come up that point to the horrible local legend of the supernatural 'soul eater'. But wasn't that just a story parents told to scare children?

A disappointing film for director duo Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, who repeatedly managed to strike the right tone in the past and cannot take advantage of this opportunity again with The Soul Eater. Fortunately, the duo remains basically skilled, which makes the practical effects look neat and the acting is well-supported. Paul Hamy stands out positively as a mysterious protagonist with a past and the other roles do an equally good job. However, the build-up of tension is particularly ineffective for the acting of Bustillo and Maury, who certainly choke on the content towards the end. A number of ridiculous plot twists and explanations do the whole thing no good and the running time is too drawn out for the fairly limited information that is presented. The Soul Eater still brings quality, but is disappointing nonetheless.
