Akio Kanzaki [Yô Ôizumi]'s life seems to be coming to nothing. His wife [Ogi Yahagi] has left him and under pressure from his boss [Kaoru Kobayashi], Akio has to fire his best friend Kibe [Kankuro Kudo]. To escape from the problems, he announces that he goes to visit his mother Fukue [Sayuri Yoshinaga], with whom he has had little contact for a long time. Fukue appears to have (figuratively) become a different person and she is also looking for new meaning in her life. She finds joy in life through her contact with the friendly Ogiso [Ryo Ryusei] while Akai seeks rapprochement with his teenage daughter Mai [Mei Nagano], who has been living with her grandmother for some time. In its own country, this was nominated for 11 awards from the Japanese Academy in 2024, but had stiff competition from Perfect Days and Godzilla Minus One in particular and did not win a single nomination. But the charming, heartwarming film shouldn't be in the shadow of those films, because it is one of the best films about the bond between parent and child in a long time. Yoshinaga is the standout of the impeccably acting cast and I found the beautiful score by veteran Akira Senju impressive enough to stay seated until the last note is played.
