A particularly pleasant surprise, this delightfully retro four-part film set in 1987. The narrative structure is somewhat reminiscent of a film like Pulp Fiction, but in terms of content this shoots in a completely different direction. The mix of action, humor and drama is very infectious in every way and the film has many nice details, both visually and narratively. In addition, Pedro Pascal is sublime here and there is a scene in a video store that is nothing less than magical.

In the city of Oakland, California, it is common for the atmosphere to be almost static. Sometimes the phenomenon is so extreme that a green glow becomes visible. The tensions in the atmosphere continue into the streets of the city. This happened especially in the year 1987. The year in which the Golden State Warriors surprisingly play in the semi-finals of the NBA. The year in which a group of neo-Nazis regularly and violently raid a punk café. The year in which the ice cream saleswomen Barbie and Entice want to make it in the hip-hop scene. And the year in which the killer Clint accepts an assignment from his gangster boss for the last time. 1987 was quite a year in Oakland, California.

Freaky Tales is a film by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. They previously made a splash with the film Captain Marvel (2019). In Freaky Tales, the duo takes the viewer on a nostalgic trip to Oakland in 1987. The film is a wild ride that is divided into four segments that take place in the same time frame but always from a changing perspective and with changing characters. There are many references to Oakland in those years. References that are meaningful for the duo Boden/Fleck, but not always for the viewer. The viewer will not always recognize the references. I didn't think that was a big deal. In any case, it didn't have an annoying effect on the consumption of the film. That consumption was pleasant.

The film is a tribute to another time. Films from that time are featured. The music. The video store. The ska-punk scene. Quite nice. The film has pace and the various episodes and bizarre events provide a varied whole. It is also nice to mention that Tom Hanks has a small role in the film. He plays a video store employee named Hank and has a hilarious scene with hitman Clint. Freaky Tales is an entertaining film. Varied, humorous, absurd and fast-paced. Nice.

Rapper Too $hort introduces four stories that largely take place simultaneously in Oakdale in 1987, starting after the screening of Lost Boys in theaters. After a group of Nazi youth crash their party, a group of friends from ethnic and social minorities prepare for revenge; Entice [Normani] and Barbie [Dominique Thorne] think they're making their debut as a rap duo, but risk getting screwed when the MC [Jordan Gomes] challenges them to a rap battle against the very sexist Too $hort; Clint [Pedro Pascal] promises his heavily pregnant wife [Natalia Dominguez] that he will leave his violent past behind; and a gangster [Ben Mendelssohn] uses a basketball game to rob the players' homes. Things only get interesting when the big names show up and give the other cast members a lesson in acting. Mendelsohn is the standout and Tom Hanks has a funny cameo as a video store owner who throws around movie trivia. So there's some variance, but it never gets to be great.
