Fourteen-year-old Masamune Kikuiri lives in a city where time stands still after an explosion in a steel factory closed all escape routes. Hoping that things will one day return to normal, the town sets a rule that nothing can be changed and Masamune spends his days in depression. One day, his intriguing and enigmatic classmate Mutsumi leads him to a blast furnace in the steel factory. There he finds Itsumi, a girl who cannot speak and acts like a wild wolf. Masamune's encounter with these two girls soon begins to upset the balance of the world.

Surprisingly nice.
I usually don't think Mappa's work is great, and the attempts to match Shinkai's magic usually don't yield much, but this anime manages to do it very well. Also because the fantasy world has to be experienced earlier, which means you have to pay quite a bit of attention, especially during the first half.
Visually it is very neat. The character designs were not entirely my thing, but the rest looks very nice. Also nice that there is a reasonably calm atmosphere, no too rushed fuss. Story is also captivating, soundtrack is functional but could have been a bit more idiosyncratic.
