Matthias [Albrecht Schuch] and Sophia [Julia Franz Richter] extinguish a golf cart on fire in this subtly constructed tragicomedy for patient viewers. The event turns out to be staged, because Matthias is an actor who hires himself out so that others can pretend to be better than they really are. However, he has now reached a point where he can no longer see his roles separately from himself. The consequences of this identity crisis unfold at a deliberate pace, so that for a long time it is not entirely clear in which direction this is going. It could all have been a bit more compact, but for fans of intelligently written satires about the modern world (in which social media make it easy to pretend to be different/better than we are) this is definitely recommended.

Pfau - Bin Ich Really? (Peacock) (2024)

Quite a few films are being made—especially in German—about the lack of contact as a crisis in contemporary society, and this is another one of them. It's primarily a critique of today's service-dominated society, where we constantly provide or purchase services—in this case, even a "companion," the current version of a hostess—services we can then review afterward: it forces us to be perfect (because we want to get a good review), which makes us less authentic, which self-alienation also alienates us from others, and communication is no longer genuine, trapping us in ourselves and our bubble. Human contact is now merely a service and therefore not human contact at all. As mentioned, the theme isn't particularly original: the satirical film is perhaps most reminiscent of the films of Ruben Östlund, but it doesn't quite reach that level, though it's certainly not a bad film either.
