In the Court of the Crimson King: King Crimson at 50 plot

Documentary about King Crimson, the progressive rock band led by Robert Fripp that has been changing line-up for fifty years. Fripp, who has also worked with David Bowie and Brain Eno, founded the band as a place of free creation. But with that freedom also comes responsibility, and the band demands a lot from its members.

On the occasion of King Crimson's 50th anniversary, Robert Fripp – the only remaining member of the original line-up – invited Toby Amies to make a documentary about this super band that hit the big time with their debut album 'In The Court Of Crimson King'. were the founders of “symphonic” or “progressive” rock. Fripp soon reveals that he was “unhappy” with the band until 2013. A nice introduction and Fripp turns out to be an extremely idiosyncratic personality. No wonder that singer/guitarist Ian McDonald and drummer Michael Giles called it quits after one album, you would say. But the history of King Crimson is an ongoing clash between musicians who want to get the very best out of themselves and each other. The ultimate center of this unconventional documentary is the endearing drummer Bill Rieflin. Anyone who has never heard of King Crimson would do well to listen to their debut album first (at least).

Fascinating portrait of what sometimes almost seems like a sect, with Fripp as the feared sect leader who, in addition to admiration and loyalty, also arouses uncertainty and fear in his followers, recovery, and band members. Especially special because the band members from the very beginning (and also the first renegades) Ian McDonald and Michael Giles still speak, and the way in which Fripp and McDonald still show their sadness about that break half a century later is rarely poignant. and moving, just like the sober reflections of the doomed Bill Rieflin. On the other hand, the comments of Trey Gunn ("a disease among the members for eleven years") and Adrian Belew are also unmistakable, but then again, a band is not a democracy, and to describe King Crimson's music you don't necessarily have to want to have coffee with Fripp (unless Toyah serves the cookies of course). And then the presence of the still unlikely youthful Bill Bruford, and brass hero from the 70s Mel Collins who is now participating again with Fripp et al., and Pete Sinfield... For those who are familiar with this series, this is a fascinating portrait, but I know I don't know if the band will win many new fans with this.
