Director Andy Fickman uses a brisk approach to start his film, a crucial choice when you're trying to stretch a horror film to 110 minutes. The advantage is that a mysterious approach follows (after a 20-minute introduction) that doesn't immediately reveal its true colors, but ultimately suffers from the director's limited control. "Don't Turn Out the Lights" isn't exciting or atmospheric, and it drags on too long for the mediocre revelation that follows. Credit to the enthusiastic cast; otherwise, the film lacks substance.
