On the Line: The Richard Williams Story plot

In never-before-aired interviews from the 1980s to the present, Richard Williams, son of a cotton picker and father of tennis legends Venus and Serena, chronicles his family's journey from the poor streets of Shreveport to the grass courts of Wimbledon. Fighting against the systems of racial oppression and violence, but also against the rules of the white tennis establishment, they managed to change the sport forever.

Venus and Serena Williams only appear in the archive footage that McClave uses to (despite the title) sketch the history of the Williams family. Because although father Richard (also) gets the most attention in this documentary, the key role of mother Oracene Price (who is also missing) is clearly emphasized. The added value compared to the Oscar-winning biopic King Richard is the use of archive footage to sketch a picture of the remarkable interaction between the family and the media. Moreover, there is significantly more attention for Richard's youth and the influence that had on his role as a father, as a coach and as a media personality. The story remains inspiring, but McClave mainly reminds you of the institutional racism that is still rampant in the US.
